Kent all-rounder Darren Stevens will spend the weekend mulling over offers to play in a couple of Twenty 20 tournaments.
The 35 year old was snapped up to play for the Dhaka Gladiators in the Bangladesh Premier League on Thursday morning, however he told Kent Sports News that he may end up not taking up the option:
“I have also been talking with the Chevrolet Warriors in South Africa, so I may end up over there as their T20 tournament begins on February 15th and runs until March 21st.”
“I’ve never been to Bangladesh before and maybe the South African offer may end up being better for me going into the new season for Kent.”
“I was glad that I got snapped up for the Bangladesh Premier League and in truth it wasn’t something that I was expecting, but we will have to sit down over the weekend and see where we go with it.”
Should he join the Warriors, Stevens would line up alongside former Kent overseas signing Wayne Parnell, along with the likes of Nicky Boje and Johan Botha.
Stevens has been in demand in recent seasons for Twenty 20 cricket, having played for the Otago Volts in New Zealand last winter with a stint for an England side in the Hong Kong sixes before Christmas.
With that in mind, the all-rounder has decided to put his name forward for this year’s Indian Premier League which begins on April 4th with the final being on played on May 27th.
That would mean he could potentially miss the first seven weeks of the domestic season, but Stevens told KSN how he had cleared it with new Head Coach Jimmy Adams:
“I’ve spoken with Jimmy and although he wants me to be playing for Kent, he understands it is a great opportunity for me to hone my skills.”
“We will have to see if I get picked up in the auction (which takes place on February 4th) and then go from there.”
“If I don’t get snapped up, I’ll be back and ready to take my place in the side for the start of the season.”
Kent could also start the season without the services of another all-rounder with Azhar Mahmood having put his name forward for the prestigious tournament.
Mahmood is currently in New Zealand playing for the Auckland Aces in their domestic Twenty 20 tournament with the final against Canterbury to take place on Sunday.
